Lowell, Massachusetts
Injuries in Middlesex County
Located at the confluence of the Merrimack and Concord Rivers, approximately 25 miles north of Boston, Lowell, Massachusetts is a city of approximately 105,000, making it the 4th largest city in Massachusetts. Originally incorporated as a planned “mill town,” Lowell now serves as a national historical site and modern city.
No discussion of Lowell is complete without mentioning the textile mills that were central to the city’s economy in the 1800s. At the time of the Civil War, Lowell featured more textile mills within the city’s limits than the 11 states of the confederacy, combined. They produced a huge percentage of the county’s clothing at the time. The mills are now almost all closed, and many serve as condominium buildings along the Merrimack River, while others are protected as a national historic site.
Lowell has a very diverse population, with over 10 percent of its population being of Cambodian descent, a population group that surged as a result of the genocide committed by the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia in the 1970s and 80s. Lowell is divided into 5 neighborhoods, the Acre, Back Central, Belvidere, Centralville, Downtown, Highlands, Pawtucketville, and South Lowell. In recent years, there has been a revitalization throughout the city, but particularly in the downtown area, which is now a hotspot for dining, nightlife, and culture.
Lowell in the 21st century also features a proud sports and educational culture. UMass Lowell’s hockey team recently competed in the Frozen Four for the first time in school history, losing in heartbreaking fashion to Yale in the semifinals. Lowell also features baseball’s Spinners of the New York Penn League, a Class A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.
